Trophy Quality

- Indicator 10 -

Target

The average trophy quality of umbrella species does not diminish.

Hypothesis

The COVAREF manage wildlife sustainably.

Sport hunting in Cameroon is mostly practiced in hunting zones which are managed by hunting guides or the local population. The specie and size of all trophies originating in these areas are registered by the local authorities. Using this data ("Confirmation of kill") one can produce time series of the trophy quality for different species for analysis. Using the internationally accepted Rowland Ward standard, trophies can be classified as big, normal or small.
When examining the overall trophy quality for different species in Cameroon, large differences in their quality are observed. The size of Bongo or Blue Duiker trophies are, for example, constantly under international standards whereas the Eland Derby or the Buffon Kob attain well-above average records almost every year.

Hunting Revenue received by COVAREF

- Indicator 33 -

Target

Until 2015 hunting revenues received by the COVAREF increase annually.

Hypothesis

The increasing number of COVAREF, improved account management and improved financial auditing of the COVAREF will contribute to increased revenues.

The first COVAREF was founded in 2000 as a decentralized structure to manage revenues generated from sport hunting and commonly managed hunting Zones (ZicGC) within the Technical Operation Unit (TOU) in the South-East of Cameroon.
COVAREF revenues from sport hunting depend on the hunting activities in the ZicGC and at the periphery of hunting areas managed by hunting guides (ZIC). Unfortunately, since 2008 and due to conflicts, no information is provided anymore.
